SECONDARY EDUCATION

Heritage Christian School provides education through the 12th grade. The secondary program builds on the foundations of academic and Biblical knowledge developed in elementary school. Emphasis is placed on academic excellence, personal responsibility, and service to others. School uniforms are required to provide a climate for success.

Bob Jones curriculum is used throughout the high school program. Core subjects include Mathematics, English, Nonrevisionist History (American, World, Government, Economics), Science (Life, Earth, Physical, Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and Foreign Languages, Computer Applications, Etiquette Class (6th -8th), and Purity Class (9th).

BLOCK SCHEDULE

HCS uses Block Scheduling for Secondary level classes. This allows for a more focused teaching format.

ELECTIVES

Elective courses provide an opportunity to expand knowledge and skills in specific areas of interest which may include art, war studies, yearbook, multimedia, personal finance, home economics, teacher aid, drama, vocal and instrumental music, worship band, and life fitness. (Electives subject to change based on demand and instructor availability).

PURITY CLASSES

Ninth grade students are divided into two classes for a 6-week period. God’s plan for dating, relationships, and marriage is taught to the students. Guest speakers are brought in occasionally, and the students are given a chance to discuss topics from a Christian perspective with the Bible as the guide.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Student Council engages students in learning about democracy and leadership. All secondary students are encouraged to get involved. The students are responsible for planning extra curricular activities such as the formal, monthly breakfasts, social events, and holiday parties.

ETIQUETTE CLASSES

Middle school students at Heritage Christian School are required to take a six-week course on etiquette. This class teaches young ladies the social etiquette, table manners, and personal style that inspires self-confidence in life, and it teaches young men the social skills and table manners that will turn lively, rambunctious boys into gentlemen. After the class is completed, the students dress up and are treated to a nice meal to practice the skills learned in the class.

Juniors and Seniors who qualify may take college coursework at HCS through Allen County Community College and receive dual high school and college credit. Heritage secondary teachers with advanced degrees teach classes each semester for Advanced placement students. Students may also take online college courses. This enables students to graduate with as many as 48 college credits along with their high school diploma.

College courses are taken during the regular school day, whether online or in the classroom. Heritage will pay up to $100 of the cost. Each semester, up to 12 credits are offered to the students.

Junior and Senior students also have the opportunity to attend Washburn Technical Institute for part of the day.

NATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY

About NHS:

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada.

Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.

Benefits of NHS:

It is a great honor to be a member of the NHS, and membership in the society is looked upon highly in the college application process. Membership also comes with other benefits, the greatest of these being college scholarship opportunities.

Selection Process:
The following is a summary of the process used by the Faculty Council of the Heritage Christian School Chapter of the National Honor Society for the selection of students for membership:

Eligibility: The first step in the process is the review of a student’s eligibility. In order to be eligible for selection to National Honor Society:
- A student must be a sophomore, junior, or senior at Heritage Christian School.
- A student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average, or GPA, must be at least 3.5.
- A student must have attended Heritage Christian School for at least one semester. Transfer students will be accepted into the HCS chapter when a letter of acknowledgement has been provided by the student’s previous Chapter Advisor.
Candidate Notification: Once a student has been determined to be eligible, he/she will be notified by letter that he/she is now considered a candidate for National Honor Society. Academic eligibility does not guarantee election to the National Honor Society. Each Candidate must then submit an application and two recommendation letters by the designated deadline.
Review: Candidate forms and recommendation letters will then be reviewed by the Faculty Council, and the council will deliberate each candidate.
Notification of Selected Members: Selected candidates and their parents will be formally notified of their selection.
Verification and induction: Selected students will be verified and inducted into the National Honor Society at a formal induction ceremony during chapel that will be open to the school as well as friends and family.
